30 May Calif: vicinity Lake Almanor, Plumas Co.
Butte Meadows. Two miles W of Meadows
ran into more extensive meadow but
found nothing but Sceloporus graciosus
which were common. Took one. Continued N
on Hwy 32, then E on 36-89 and S on 89
to Big Meadows Dam & Lake Almanor. Stopped
several places along this route but found no
Rana or Triturus. Most of this route through
typical Transition Forest with occasional rises
to Canadian, eg. at junction of Hwys 32 and
36-89. Camped on No. Fork Feather River at
Seneca.
31 May Much morning spent searching downstream
for Triturus and Rana boylii. A dozen
scattered Triturus taken plus one batch of
newly laid eggs. No frogs seen. Several
Thamnophis elegans taken along stream.
Sceloporus graciosus and occidentalis common
on same rocks along roadway. Local
kid says no frogs present - water to rapid.
Says also that rattle snakes abundant
in pits near stamping mill of gold(?)
mine upstream from bridge at Seneca.
Says thamnophis zonata occurs in area
also. On his advise went to Round Valley
Reservoir to get frogs. Saw more - for
to many fishermen but probably only
