W. Riemer 1952 Journal 3 May Calif.: San Mateo & Santa Cruz cos. One day trip to Santa Cruz and return with family. Objective to check suitable localities for Triturus. First stop a pools 2½ mi. W San Bruno, San Mateo Co. Water clear but tea colored with dark bottom. Visibility poor in water, no Triturus seen. Examined stream 3 mi E, ¼ mi. N Pescadero. Sand and rocky bottoms, deep pools, stream to 30 feet wide. No Triturus. Several areas along this stream look favorable for Triturus but not examined because of numerous fishermen. Continued to Santa Cruz on State Hwy 1. Returning home followed State Hwy 9 to Boulder Creek then Bear Creek Road toward Los Gatos. 1¾ mi E, 1½ mi N Boulder Creek Captured one T. [illegible] and collected R. boylii eggs. Returned home via State Hwy 17. Weather fair, sunny, warm. 24 May Calif.: Contra Costa Co. Visited both study areas. At Lafayette 1310- 1330 hrs. No Triturus. Lake level lower than I've ever seen it. Grass beginning to dry. At Pinelurst 1400-1430, stream clear and gentle flow. No Triturus or larvae. 1420 hrs. air 22°C, H₂O 15°C. Weather warm, sunny and clear. Soil at Pinelurst still damp even in rather exposed roadside places.
