2 Sept Calif.: Tuolumne Co. Next morning checked
Phoenix Lake, a shallow, muddy shore
pond for Triturus. Did not appear
favorable. Fish and R. catesbeiana
abundant. Drove next to Twain Harte
and checked lake there (3600 feet), local
resident claimed area too high. Lake
swarming with fish; a resort lake.
Returning to Sonora checked Curtis
Creek about one half mile down stream
from Soulsbyville. Appeared to be an
excellent spot for Triturus. Stream
small with many deep pools, shallow
mud and sand bends, rock bottoms,
algal mats. Well shaded and sunny
areas. Rana boylii abundant, larvae
and post-larval forms present. Hyla
young present. Many mouldy meta-
morphosing boylii dead. Collected only
a single Clemmys marmorata, being
saved as pet. Temperature of air at 1100
hrs. 22°C, water 17°C. Knowing that
Clarke had said that pools were present
through year in Woods Creek at Saurmill
Flat we then returned to that area. Found
both his home and ruin when investigating
a dense green stand of trees along
stream course. In one small pool
