1 Sept. Calif.: Tuolumne and Calaveras cos. (2) to located
area with a population of a size
such that large samples could be collected
at the proper time. Left Albany at 0900
hrs arrived at Sonora about 1330 hrs.
First checked Woods Creek at Sawmill Flat
a few miles SE of Columbia. Stream bed
dry. Triturus taken here in spring by
Wm Clarke. Continued on to Vallecito
stopping to check Stanislaus River at
Parrott's (spelling?) Ferry. Shore with complete
lack of vegetation, extensive rock and
sand beaches, many small fish. Did
not appear favorable for Triturus. Next
checked Angels Creek about 1 mi. upstream
from Angels Camp. Streamed largely
chocked with ripening blackberries but
in open pools large (6 inch) fish present
and the Rana catesbeiana tadpoles and
adults present. No Triturus. Returned to
Sonora via Tuttlestown checking Stanis-
laws River again. River with even wider
barren sand banks and no quiet shore
waters. Also checked small stream near
Tuttlestown but no Triturus found. Plenty
of deep and quiet pools, submerged and
floating vegetation. Camped for night
ENE Phoenix Lake.
