18 Aug. Calif.: Mendocino Co., Robinson Creek, 4 mi S, 1 mile W of
at Shaggs Springs. Rana metamorphosing.
Thamnophis elegans and sirtalis, young
Ecaloporus also seen. Spent 1715-1815 hrs
in area, 1745 hrs. air 33°C, water
25°C. Stream flowing with numerous
deep-2 feet-pools. As large as stream
at Shaggs Springs.
19 Aug. Calif.: Mendocino Co., Russian Gulch State Park,
Started from camp site on James Creek,
a tributary of north fork of Big River, on
road from Willits to Fort Bragg at 0930 hrs.
No collecting done at this spot except that
Stuart found one Triturus granulosus adult
in stream. Stopped at State Park to look
for Ascaphus truani and Triturus. Bill
Salt, formerly of M.V.Z. had collected
Ascaphus here earlier in summer. This
is southernmost record. 1030-1130 spent
looking for aquatic forms. None found.
Also nothing found in damp logs or
under bark. One Batrachoseps found
under rock at edge of rivulet. Beautiful
park and ideal-looking stream. Vegetation
dense, many broad leaves mixed with Sequoia.
