20 May Calif.: Sonoma and Mendocino Co. sections of logs.
Hoped to find more Oncaides. Took only
Ensatina adult and several young
under logs. One Thamnophis elegans
on road. Returned then to Berkeley.
26 May Calif.: Contra Costa Co. Visited Pinchurst
study area only for purpose of checking
on hatching time of larvae of Triturus.
1315-1400 hrs. Weather hot and humid.
Two large R. aurora in area. First
seen there this season. Also tailless
Ensatina adult walking in open near
stream. When placed in water it
could not swim at all. Apparently
they rely on tail largely for locomotion.
27 May Calif.: Santa Cruz Co., San Lorenzo River,
Boulder Creek (town). While collecting
grasses at edge of stream a large
R. boylii frightened into stream.
Easily captured. 6-8 ft. No Triturus seen.
Stream deep and often swift.
9 June Calif.: Contra Costa Co. Visited both
Triturus study areas. At Lafayette
1030-1130 hrs. Group of larvae collected.
At Pinchurst 1145-1245 hrs. Eggs now
hatching. Weather clear, warm.
Grasses dry, most of flowers gone.
