20 May Calif.: Sonoma and Mendocino cos. where species
of Triturus exist sympatrically and to collect
Aneides for C. Howe. First stop at Skaggs
Springs in Sonoma Co. Stream clear,
moderate current, 50 ft. wide with
occasional deep, 6 ft (?), pools. Earlier
in year found nothing but T. rivularis.
This time only T. granulosus. Zweifel
took Rana boylii and one Aneides
flavipunctatus. Soil, except under very
large logs completely dry. Grasses
partially dried. Next stop at Robinson
Creek, 4 mi. SW Weish, in Mendocino Co.
Stream small with many rocks and
rapids in places. T. granulosus, T. rivularis,
lawae, Rana boylii and Riodophis amabilis
captured. Riodophis under log on wet
sand at edge of tiny ravinelet in dense, left
chaparral. 3rd stop at 8½ WSW Willette
(12.5 mi. by rd.) in Mendocino Co. High above
canyon bottom. Douglas fir and chaparral.
One T. granulosus in spring seep, Ensatina
and Batrachoseps under logs and one
large Aneides ferreus under bark of large
pine stump. Several small ones under
bark of fallen log and under board on
wet soil. Last stop 6 mi. WSW Willette
(9.0 mi. by rd.). Many stumps and downed
