17 Mar. Calif.: Contra Costa Co. On grassy slopes
on west side of lake rodent trails and
burrows extremely abundant. Thought
weather suitable saw no snakes. Is this
perhaps why so many rodents. Is grass
too dense for snakes.
At Pinelurst Triturus area 1350 to 1515 hrs.
Warm, sunny, clear. Stream flow moderate,
clear. Two o77 recorded, #128 and #9
a recapture. Water temp. 11°C, air temp.
16.5°C at 1500 hrs. Yellow violets now
blooming.
18 Mar. Calif.: San Mateo Co. Party of myself and wife,
Chas. Hanson, Joe Klotz and Rich. Zweifel drove
down San Francisco peninsula on State Hwy
5 (Skyline Blvd.), turning off to La Honda,
Peacockero, San Gregorio, La Honda and
return by Hwy 5. Objective: to establish
positively the presence of Triturus granulosus
in the pools adjacent to Hwy 5 just
opposite the San Francisco Co. Prison road
intersection. Granulosus is present in
these pools, (see species account this date).
Also about these pools several Thamnophis
sirtalis multiviricatus were taken and one
Coluber constrictor. Chango Batrachoseps were
common.
Near La Honda (1 mi. N, 2 mi. E) stopped
