4 Mar. Calif.: Napa and Sonoma Co. and Triturus
rivalularis and granulosus. Two hrs drive
to Calistoga. First stop at Robt Louis
Stevenson's Home at the summit of pass
between Calistoga and Middletown. Hoped
to find A. flavipunctatus here. Found Batrach-
oepea and one small Ensatina only. Snow
in patches still on ground. Raining.
Presumably too cold for amphibians in
general. Can Batrachoepea tolerate lower
temperatures than the others? The
place is a group of abandoned buildings
mostly in bad decay. Salamander
habitat in form of debris and rocks,
logs, etc. abundant. Probably a good
spot when warmer. Air temp. 6° C.
Returned to Calistoga, then drove to
Straggs Springs in north-central Sonoma
Co. Here hoped to find T. rivalaris and
granulosus as well as A. flavipunctatus.
Nice series of Oviedes flavipunctatus taken
from under rocks and burnt fence
posts lying on ground. Oviedes lugubris,
mostly young, taken chiefly under bark
of logs. T. rivalaris taken on road and
near stream (see that species account).
Also taken here were Sceloporus occidentalis,
under bark, Diadophis anomabilis and
