17 Feb. Calif.: Contra Costa Co., in concrete lined pit, from which 10 taken last week. Walked along west side of lake examining shoreline and boards where they seemed suitable for Triturus to be. Objective: to gather a number for experimental fertilization techniques. Five adults taken from water and 25 from land either under boards when sun out or walking on surface after rains started. One juvenile with smooth skin and gill stubs taken under board; weak; some glandular imbalance so that metamorphosed only now?
