10 Feb. Calif.: Contra Costa Co. adults noticed
walking about on surface, especially in
area, partially swept clean, overlying
drain pipes above area. Are animals
lying in hiding under litter on ground ready
to emerge at darkness or time of rain?
At Lafayette 1245-1335, Wind and very
murky water prevented seeing any Triturus
on dam face. One seen in pool above
dam. Two plump ff taken, one under
board near water, the other halfway up
grassy slope walking in open. Examined
deep concrete lined pit below dam.
Contained 10 adult Triturus, 1 large and 1
small Rana aurora, 1 large Hyla. All
apparently trapped and unable to get out.
Removed all. Check next week may
indicate rate at which they get trapped.
At Tilden Regional Park inspected stream
in region of tennis courts. Two adult
♂ Triturus taken but stream appears
as yet to be too fast and muddy.
17 Feb. Visited both study areas today. At Pinelurst 1015-
1215 hrs. 1145 hrs both water and air 10° C. Stream
still high and rapid but fairly clear. Adult
♂ with well-developed breeding pigment areas
in stream. Saw no ♀ in stream (#123-127).
At Lafayette 1245-1600 hrs. 10 adult Triturus
