Salamander census of road between
Pinchurst and Canyon made this
evening after first fall rain. Rain had
stopped for the day with 0.41 in. in
Pinchurst rain gauge. Road covered
between 2245-10145 hours. Walking
with lanterns from Pinchurst to Canyon
and return. Rich. Zweifel and myself
reach covering half of roadway, apparently
no animals except possibly Batrachoseps
overlooked. Following is total count.
Triturus torosus 89
Eusatiria zochscholtzii 34 (one a very tiny juv.)
Oreides lugubris 11
Batrachoseps attenuatus 19
Hyla regilla 2
Rana aurora 1
Five of Triturus captured for stomach
contents and gonad development.

0845-1015 hrs at Triturus study area. 0845
air 15.5°C, water 17.0°C. Water level down
several inches from last week. Heavy rains
all during past week and soil thoroughly wet
even though weather today clear and sunny. Only
one metamorphosed Triturus under test
board. Under boards on hillside above
