W. Reimer 1950 Journal 14 Oct. Calif.: Contra Costa Co., leaves test board at very upper edge of wet zone of soil. Several young Triturus thrown back into water. All quickly swam to bottom to hid in bottom debris. No sign of any swimming about in labe though several attempts made to see such if present. Do they hid in bottom debris during day? At Pinchurst 1315-1415. At 1410 hrs. air 18.5°C, water 10.5°C. #102a, a Rana aurora recaptured. Many larvae still present in pool below drains and several brought back for observations on growth. 21 Oct. Checked both Triturus study areas today. At Pinchurst 1115-1215 hrs. 1130, water 9.8°C in pool below drains, air 13.6°C. larvae still present in pool, water murky, level of water slowly dropping through pool still 10-12 ft. across. One Triturus taken #103. Slight amount of rain early in week did not enough to moisten soil. At Lafayette Reservoir 1245-1330 hrs. No temp. taken. Water level about six inches below last week. 188 young Triturus taken under test board. Soil underneath still wet. Cattails not actually in water are drying. Young Thamnophis elegans atratus(?) seen near test board. Photographed area, weather warm and clear.
