W. Reiner 1950 Journal 25 May Calif.: Contra Costa Co. Neither under boards nor in water. One R. aurora marked, the first seen in area. Also saw one young T. elegans terrestris but not marked. Egg clusters at 103.2-2.2 with rough exteriors and opaque layer of silt covering them. Many larvae hatched already but most still in clusters. Again the adults disappear just as eggs begin hatching. Do the eggs or larvae secrete a substance initiating this response of the adults. No additional clusters than the 15 counted (last week seen). Fish also not present this week in deep pool. 1200 hrs., water 11.8°C, air 13.8°C. Also examined former upper portion of study area (now abandoned). No eggs where laid last year, no adults, most of pools now filled with silt and gravel. 1 Jun. Visited both study areas to determine progress of adult and larval Triturus. At Pinchurst 1100-1200 hrs. 1130, water 13.8°C; air 17.5°C. Most of egg clusters at 103.2-2.2 now without larvae and much degenerated. Only one cluster still with apparently most of larvae. Two larvae seen in water within few feet of clusters. One 15 mm. long. Shallow water
