30 Apr. Mexico: Guerrero; 3 mi. W Omitlán, 8200 ft.
up one of the rats and a bird of Koford's. In
the evening Koford and I walked down to Omitlán
in the hopes of taking a snake on the road,
looking for anurans in the stream and
shooting bats over a concrete water basin
just above Omitlán. A few bats seen flying
after dark but no good shots were presented. Did
not start flying until too dark. There were
many (about two dozen) snake tracks crossing
dusty roadway in about three and one-half
miles down to Omitlán, plus several
lizard tracks. Most snakes apparently
headed downhill. In one spot track
started with a rough loop near edge
of road as if snake had simply fallen
off overhanging ledge of road cut above.
Is this the usual method of solving the
problem of steep roadcuts? No snakes
seen though a Barissa apparently killed
by a native was found at the edge of the
road. Only one anuran, a hybrid, was
taken by eye shine at edge of stream
immediately above concrete pool. It later
escaped in some unexplained way. No
animals taken on return to camp. A few
tadpoles taken from concrete pool and
stream. Some bird present just below camp.
