25 Apr. Mexico: Dayaca: — Broke camp near Diftan
because of lack of suitable spot in which to
camp away from the hordes of people. Spot near
Cerro San Felipe selected as new camp but abandoned
in a few hours because of unfavorable steep
terrain, heavy population and excessive agricul-
tural use of land. Drove in afternoon to
spot 150 mi. from Puebla where camped for
night.
26 Apr. Mexico: Distrito Federal: — Drove into
Puebla and on to Mexico City in morning
stopping only to pick up a Pittoophis near
Mexico City. Stayed in city for night.
27 Apr. Mexico: Guerrero: 3 mi. W Omiltepe, 8200 ft.
Leaving Mexico City early, drove S directly to
Chilpancingo, then west on a very rough steep
dirt road to this locality on the ridge above
Omiltepe. Between Mexico City and Cuernavaca
one climbs over a ridge & mountains with
much good pine forest and tall grasses. Beyond
Cuernavaca the terrain is all overworked and
overgrazed. The road, though paved, is not
smooth anywhere. Chilpancingo lies in an
arid valley of almost barren land. Rising up
on the way to this locality one passes quickly
into a palmetto zone which persists some
time until one reaches oaks and pines. Omiltepe
is a lumber mill town well up in the pines.
