19 Apr. Mexico: Chiapas: 28 mi. ESE Comitan, 4900 ft., San Jose
Walking S to San Jose and then downhill
SW to aid than scrub area. In than scrub
took one & many Troglodytes nausculus, lower
down saw two Cnemidophorus (in size and
pattern much like C. tessellatus) chasing one
another. No successful in capturing them.
No other lizards seen. Shot three Caprimulgus
which were flushed within 5-10 minutes walking
along small game trail. They are slow in
rising in flight seldom getting above the
shrubbery and after 50-100 ft. of flight
settle back to perch on ground. Flush when
one approaches to within about 50 ft. Two
taken on wing, one while perched on low
stump. Noted presences also of bluebird,
mockinbird, solitaire and an oriole-like
juncos. Occasional large jumpers present.
In returning to camp shot a Xiphocolaptes
in open pine woods.
20 Apr. Kofad, I and a guide made trip to del Arco
a series of limestone caves beyond San Jose
and near village of Arco. In going and
coming from area shot a Xiphocolaptes, a
Piranga and two Campylorhynchus. In addition
got two Anolis and two species (three specimens)
of Sceloporus. A pool down in the bottom of
the largest cave visited had an anuran
