17 Apr. Mexico: Chiapas: 28 mi. ESE Comitan, 4900 ft., San Jose
In morning Koford and I, led by a native of Tierra
Blanca went down to the lake to look for a
"red red heron" reputed by the natives to be there.
Hunting along the way I took two chipping
sparrows. At the lake, just west of the area
visited a few days previous I got a mockingbird
and a yellowthroat. The native shot theicterid.
The herons were not present on arrival at the lake,
but noted were coots and pie-billed grebes. While
walking along the shore in returning to camp got
another yellowthroat in the sawgrass along
the edge of the water and saw (taken by Koford)
a large hawk circling overhead. This bird offered
a lively and lucky chase through the surrounding woods. A group of toad larvae were taken
at the edge of the lake in shallow water near
a growth of small sedges. A toad was taken
in a trampled grassy area a little distance
from the lake in a marshy sawgrass area.
It is not certain who actually shot the other
birds taken today. Two rodents in trap line.
18 Apr. Camp cool and guard today. Took one ant-eater
Paromyscus from trapline in morning. This is
first mammal ever put up. Rest of day spent
in putting up yesterday's skins. Koford brought
in another of the green vine snakes that
Pitelka found the other day.
