10 Apr. Mexico: Chiapas: 28 mi. ESE Comitan, 4900ft., San Jose
more hilly. This eventually gives way to
quite hilly country near Montebello
covered with rather dense jungle vegetation.
Weather all day sunny and warm.
11 Apr. Camp guard and cook today. Put up some birds
and reptiles and amphibians. No hunting.
Weather sunny and clear.
12 Apr. Went north to lakeshore in morning. On way
there through pine woods shot a robin, a
flycatcher and two ivory-bill woodpeckers.
Sallows flying at lake over marshy sedge
and grass area at borders, Weather
windy and occasional short showers. Warm.
In evening returned to lake, with Koford.
After dark above mouth of stream took five
Rana pipiens showing a variety of spotting from
much to none. A very few frogs present
in grass (6-8 ft. tall) at marshy edges of
lake, but abundant along streams entering
lake.
13 Apr. While trying to shoot bats entering a bald tree
at dawn was able to shoot a tree squirrel
in a oak. (See catalogue C. Koford). Spent most
day in camp putting up specimens from
yesterday and day before. In afternoon went
to densely wooded jungle slope to examine
branaliado for amphibians. Pulled apart three
