8 Apr. Mexico: Chiapas: 28 mi. ESE Caintan, 4900 ft., San Jose.
hiding place of a murine opossum which promptly
ran up a small tree, it was shot. On the
lower side of the ridge the growth is of oak
and agave, thistle and small shrubs. An
Aphelocoma unicolor was taken in the pine
woods and a Trogon mexicanus at the edge
of the stream-course jungle. Again a large
number of pieces of surface litter were turned
over but no reptiles or amphibs. This place
is apparently no so damp at night as
the previous locality and the underside
of bark of fallen logs in exposed places is
never wet enough for salamanders; also the
bark is seldom very thick.
9 Apr. Camp cook and guard today. Shot a Sialia in
camp and put up several of Kofords birds.
In afternoon took 2 young Rana pipiens
a margin of small pool in opening in pine
woods. Weather: windy but warm and sunny.
10 Apr. Spent entire day in field. Walked almost as far
as Montebello. First took coral snake under
small log just beyond Tierra Blanca. Then
found several Ranids of two species at edge
of small muddy pool nearby. Also at this
pool took one very small Hybid. A few
hundred yards away searched vicinity of
ridge marsh for Thamnophis but found none.
