1 Apr. Mexico: Chiapas: 6 mi. SE San Cristobal, 7300 ft.
Spent entire morning and first half of
afternoon in and around cleared area
SE of camp. Objective: to see if the two
local species of Scalopous are in any
way segregated ecologically and to collect
series of each. Took 4 of blue-bellied species
and eight of orange-bellied species in that
cleared area. No segregation evident. Also
took Bothrops and Pitrophis in early
morning before place well warmed up.
Also got two salamanders under trunk of
stump in cleared area but could find
none in thick damp spot of lush
vegetation at edge of clearing. Took a
hummingbird, a quetzal and a wren
on trip to and from area. In evening
shot red bat on the wing. Weather
during day warm and sunny without
wind. At night, sprinkled intermittently
for several hours.
20 Apr. Because of intermittent light rains during night >
got very little sleep, felt lousy and stayed
in camp working on specimens until late
afternoon. At that time shot flycatcher and
a thrush near stream. Worked way about
a half mile down stream. (No place is
