19 Mar. Mexico: Durango: except one small Pana pipiens
at edge of stream. During morning of 19 Mar.
(very cold; -8°C at about 0730, shortly after sunrise)
I took a robin, stellar jay, ruby-crowned kinglet,
white-breasted nuthatch, pygmy nuthatch, brown
creeper and mexican junco. Seen, were
western bluebirds (attempting copulation),
ravens, turkey vulture, woodpeckers. See
lists of Keford and Pitelka for other birds taken
and seen. A great variety of species present
and all surprisingly tame. Most of rest of
day spent in preparing specimens. At time
of departure saw 4-5 in. Anubystoma lava
in stream but unable to collect. Specimen
strongly mottled with blackish and white.
In late afternoon moved down again toward
Durango, but at dark setup camp about
14 mi. E of Plana Grande. General notes:
Weather, except for very cold night last night,
extremely mild and pleasant with seldom a
wisp of a cloud. Road between Durango and
Durango excellent except for short detours
where bridges being constructed or repaired.
Road to El Salto from Durango wide but
corduroyed and travel limited to about 20
mph. This is dry season throughout area
traversed, and little color but browns in
landscape except in cultivated valleys along
