14 Mar. Taxos; Hudspeth Co., 10 mi. W Eagle Peak
various sparrow-like birds. Howard took a
white-breasted nuthatch. No pyrrhuloxia, our goal,
were seen. For brief description of area see 12 Mar.
Journal. To be added in fact that wash flanked
on both sides by extensive areas of creosote bush.
By midmorning we were returning to El Paso to pick
up Pitelka who would be returning from business
in Mexico City.
19 Mar. Mexico: Durango:
On evening of 16 Mar., we
passed finally through customs and proceeded
toward Chiapas with dispatch. On that
might we camped, to sleep only, in an extensive
grassland area perhaps 100 mi. N of Chihuahua
City. Prior to that point most of the terrain
was truly desert as in adjacent Texas. On
17 Mar., after driving all day, camped in arid
mountains about 120 mi. N of Hidalgo de Parral.
Reached Durango in early afternoon
of 18 Mar. and during afternoon took side
trip toward Mazatlan to point 3 mi SW
El Salto, Durango. Objective: to sample
bird population, especially jays, in conifer
zone of Sierra Madre Occidental. Camp
setup in conifers, 8400 ft. near large
stream. Area in use as stock range and
greasy areas (dry) well trampled. At night
heard a horned owl but took nothing
