5 Mar. Texas: Culberson Co., Guadalupe Mts, McKittick Canyon
series of vertical cliffs on either side rising
500 ft. or more. Canyon bottom here is about
75-100 ft. across and largely a jumble of rocks.
The stream forms numerous deep, (6 ft.?), pools
with large rainbow trout. Yellow pine and
a madrone-like tree sparsely present. Canyon
wrens calling frequently. Canyon still too
well shaded and cool in mid morning for
reptiles. In lower, wider portion of canyon,
bottom about 1/4 mi. wide, stream forms no
deep pools and rocks not large. Sides
not entirely vertical though many such
sheer limestone faces evident. Fair yellow
pine, juniper common, rather extensive
stands of dead and/or dormant maple and
oak. Most such stands low and scrubby,
15-20 ft. Others of tall trees. Bunch grass
everywhere since no grazing permitted in
this canyon. Large madrone occur in small
numbers. Also present are a yucca, cholla,
prickly pear, agave and many unknown forms.
On slopes above canyon in protected areas,
their stands of yellow pine reach to ridges.
On returning to camp about noon noted
robins, woodpeckers, canyon wren, and took
a goldfinch. Search in mid afternoon revealed
no frogs. They had been calling in morning,
