W. Rieman 1950 Journal 4 Mar. Texas: Culberson Co., Guadalupe Mts, McKittrick Canyon from camp. Most of day spent in putting up these skins. In late afternoon examined portion of stream about 300 ft. above camp where Koford claimed to have heard frogs calling. Frogs were induced to call at this spot while last rays of sun still warming area. None of frogs seen at this time though they responded well to call like drumming of woodpecker. At least 4 or 5 animals present. In evening just after darkness inspected site with flash lamp and spotted two frogs in water but deep within hollow in tangle of roots. Only marks noticed were gray mottle on periphery of chin and strong cross bars on thighs. This strongly suggests R. pipiens as did call notes. Only a few weak calls induced in evening. Is this because of coldness? Do frogs act secretive because this is not yet breeding season? Was this a pair seen tonight? Near flowing portion of stream are several pools with anuran larvae. Some of these should be collected. In late afternoon took 3 Urosaurus enjoying last rays of sun on vertical, fissured limestone wall of canyon. 5 Mar. During morning went up canyon several miles, Beyond end of road, about 2 miles above camp, canyon narrows considerably and consists of
