from camp. Most of day spent
in putting up these skins. In late afternoon
examined portion of stream about 300 ft. above
camp where Koford claimed to have heard frogs
calling. Frogs were induced to call at this spot
while last rays of sun still warming area.
None of frogs seen at this time though they
responded well to call like drumming of
woodpecker. At least 4 or 5 animals present.
In evening just after darkness inspected site
with flash lamp and spotted two frogs in water
but deep within hollow in tangle of roots.
Only marks noticed were gray mottle on
periphery of chin and strong cross bars on thighs.
This strongly suggests R. pipiens as did call
notes. Only a few weak calls induced in
evening. Is this because of coldness? Do frogs
act secretive because this is not yet breeding
season? Was this a pair seen tonight?
Near flowing portion of stream are several pools
with anuran larvae. Some of these should be
collected. In late afternoon took 3 Urosaurus
enjoying last rays of sun on vertical, fissured
limestone wall of canyon.
