W. Riemer 1950 Journal 2 Mar. New Mexico: Otero Co., Cloudcroft bloom and green grass everywhere. Now, except for recent dampening by snow, everything dry, dusty-looking and many plants leafless. Noticed no grass. Did not attempt to look for A. handii. In afternoon drove to yellow pine area several miles NE of Mescalero in Otero Co. Again, I feel salamanders might be found in this region though at present ground frozen in spots even at surface. White pine and Douglas fir also present. In evening returned to El Paso. 4 Mar. Texas: Culberson Co., Guadalupe Mts., McKitttrick Canyon. Late on 3 March drove to this locality to camp for weekend. Spatial relations of features shown on map not known to be accurate. McKittrick Canyon is, at least in part, owned by Mr. Pratt who main- tains it as a wildlife refuge. With special permission got key to special ungrazed portion of canyon. Made camp here about one half mile above locked gate. Very late when camp established on night of 3 March. In early morning of 4 March took four birds: 2 juncos, 1 wren, 1 goldfinch within 0.5-mile down canyon
