Somewhere about
NE of Mt. Diablo Peak stopped to examine
two large cattle tanks just N.S. Marsh
Creek Rd. Open quarry hills, looks ideal
for Triturus, for Ambystoma also, but
none seen.
Excellent appearing stretch of stream immediately
below Marsh Creek Park on Marsh Cr. Rd.
examined. Here, stream flanked by heavy
woodland on one side and light oak
woodland with grass and some dry
chaparral on other side. One R. aurora
taken, but not kept, in rotten log.
At spot almost due S.S. Antioch again
examined Marsh Cr. Appeared excellent.
No Triturus. Local rancher and
also several local boys state "water-
dogs" or "lizard" present in stream
2-3 weeks later in season - about
early March. Recognized specimen
when shown one. Stream 1-2 ft. deep
and 20-30 ft. wide. Dry in summer
so animals must breed in some
more permanent water. Rancher says
large numbers removed from Sycamore
Springs "back up in hills" last (?).year.
One Rana boylii taken in stream.
Do Triturus have a different activity period if
present here?
