W.Reiner 1950 Journal 18 Feb. Calif: Contra Costa Co, Pinchard Is the presence of open grassy or at least open ground a factor in distribution of Triturus? During this side trip noted a few amplexing pairs of Triturus, all in shallow water, one pair almost entirely out of water. Unpaired ?♂ also present. Noted perhaps 8-10 animals. Recaptured #69b, a R. boylii originally marked in pool beneath drain pipes above area. How did it get so far down- stream? Or did it only move upstream to pool beneath drain pipes because it was only remaining pool & water in fall months? In area itself Triturus captured 3 new ?♀, all at one spot and 3 ?♂, all at one spot. One ?♂ a recapture from January. This animal, #88, in same spot originally marked in spite of several severe floodings, and flushings of stream since first marked. Do animals leave water when such flushings occur or do quiet pools always exist for retreating into? Two juveniles also taken. None of ?♂ completely pigmented for breeding yet within area of study. Obviously season here is later than at Trafayette.
