16 Feb. Calif.: Contra Costa Co, Lafayette Reservoir
kept as captive. One Rana aurora
taken for experimental uses. Hylla
seen almost everywhere though not
common and occasionally calling
from hillside. At dusk, in descending
face of dam picked up a number of
young Triturus, some young of the
year and a Cottia.
18 Feb. Calif.: Contra Costa Co, Pinchot
Spent 1430-
1730 in study area. 1645 hrs: air 11.4°C,
water 8.4°C. Weather clear and sunny.
Batrachosaps under every piece of cover. 10
Ensatina seen, many small. Water
now clear with good flow. Walked
downstream perhaps a quarter mile
to determine if Triturus population
below study area (out of redwoods)
any more dense than in area, and
also to see if any marked animals had
moved or been washed downstream.
Triturus noted only in two spots in
stream, such spots near open grassy
slope and oak woodland. In rest of
area only tangled thick mass of shrub-like
vegetation present near stream. No
Triturus in these areas. Will they
remain absent even later in season?
