16 Feb. Calif: Contra Costa Co., Lafayette Reservoir
Visited Triturus study area for first time
since 28 Jan. 1430-1815 hrs spent in area.
Willows budding, soil still very damp,
grass 4-6 in. high. 1800 hrs. temp. air
8.5°C, water & lake and pool mentioned
below 11.5°C. 19-25, adult ff taken
under boards or in open. All but two
active on surface. All ff apparently
in water. ff especially in evidence
at dusk when they appear to begin
moving about. Many more seen
than could be marked in trines
available. One ff recaptured, #18. Map of
area made and metal number tags put
on cover items. In a pool about 25 ft.
across and 7 un determined depth, formed
by the blocking of a ravine by a road fill,
a large number of breeding Triturus
noted. At least 10 amplexing pairs counted.
Large numbers (30-40) non amplexing
individuals (o? and ff) also seen. Water
murky and thin coffee color. Amplexing
pair seen near the center over deep
water and, also near shore. Decided
preference evident for shallow water
amplexing. At least five pair in
water 1-2 in. deep and one of those
