21 Jan. Calif.: Contra Costa Co. an apparently newly
metamorphosed one, gill stubs still present.
If so, metamorphosing takes place over
considerable period of time. Noted a Hyla
regilla and Rana aurora at about 150
ft. from water on grassy slope. Rana
under piece of litter. Adult ♀ Triturus
noted on roadway to dam top but
probably 500 ft. from nearest lake, the
nearest permanent water. To reach water
must move up over dam.
28 Jan. Visited both Triturus study areas. At
Lafayette from 1145 to 1300. Weather damp
and overcast. Visit occurred during temporary
hull in rain. 1230 hrs: air 7.2°C,
water 8.8°C. Three new adults taken.
By standing on banks noted that several
Triturus already in water and occasionally
coming up for air. Batrachoseps
under one of boards on ridge. At Pinchurst
area 1330 - 1415 hrs. 1345 hrs: air 7.0°C,
water 8.0°C. No Triturus seen. Stream
now muddy and impossible to know
if any animals in water. What was fate
of animal noted in water last week? Was
he flushed downstream during heavy
rains of week or did he leave water?
11 Ensatina noted. Batrachoseps common.
