14 Jan. Calif.: Contra Costa Co. Very heavy rains
during entire week. No Triturus. Two
Batrachoseps on ridge at upper edge of
area. In Pinchurst area 1200-1245.
1220 hrs. air 5.0°, water 5.6°C. Stelbuis
reports 4 inches rain in past week. Four
Ensatria noted. Batrachoseps common
but not abundant. DOR Triturus noted on
roadway between Lafayette and Moraga
21 Jan. Two Triturus study areas visited. Pinchurst
from 1215-1330 hrs. 134' hrs: air 13.0°, water
10.2°C. Storm during week brought water
level higher than at any time since study
begun. No significant change in stream
ded within study area though such changes
present at other places. Many of pieces
of litter on stream banks removed by
water. 19 Ensatria noted but Batrachoseps
not correspondingly abundant. Single
Triturus seen. Animal in water and
represents first aquatic animal of season.
Breeding condition in evidence. Such
condition must be assumed before entering
water. At Lafayette 1500-1545 hrs. 1545 hrs:
air 15.4°, water 12.6°C. Water level very high
in lake displacing Boards A-D. Three Triturus
seen. Two adults, ff, moving toward water
on surface in late afternoon. Other animal
