W. Riemer 1949 Journal 17 Sept. Calif., Contra Costa Co., Pinehurst Objective on this trip merely to observe condition of stream and note development of larvae of Triturus. One hour survey of entire study area revealed: Growth of plants during summer near stream extensive whereas much of annual cover away from stream now dry. Stream level has dropped until in upper portion of area most of water confined to large disconnected pools. In lower portion only a few small muddy pools remain. Temp. of water 12.0°C; air 16.0°C. Only one larva seen. In lower area 103.2-2.3 one half-grown larva in murky pool 2 x 5 ft. X 8.5 cm. deep. Water striders and beetles of various sorts present. Larva wary and only brief glimpse obtained while animal resting in shallow water at edge of pool. Did not reappear even after long wait. 24 Sept. Objective today was to note what changes might have occurred in water level during past week and to measure a few larvae to determine degree of development.
