16 Aug. New Mexico, Santa Fe Co., Santa Fe to
Colorado, Hays Animas Co., nv. Sopris
In morning drove to Coules on U.S.
Hwy 84-85 and State Hwy 63. Place
recommended to R. Stelbrink by S.
Beepold & M.V.Z. as spot possibly
suitable for salamanders. Two hour
search revealed none though many
wet rotten logs examined. Soil
much drier than soil in
Jemez Range where Plethodons found
but otherwise much the same. In
early afternoon spent hour searching
in Holy Ghost Recreation Area W of Terreno
just S of Coules. Here soil moist
and conditions appeared more ideal than
in Jemez Range. Found only one
T. elegans. An excellent appearing
spot to camp. Returning to U.S. Hwy
84-85 drove to vicinity Trinidad
in Colorado to camp for evening.
Hwy 85 used beyond Las Vegas, New
Mexico.
