7 Aug. New Mexico, Chaves Co., Roswell to Eddy Co., Carlsbad
compactilis and seen was a Natrix (?) in
the river. Found that by hitting or
tapping two loosely held rocks together
a good imitation of Acris could be made.
Succeeding in getting the chorus to
respond several times with such a
method. First calls made singly and
slowly tempo built up as in a
train starting to roll. No notes as
to timing and pitch taken.
8 Aug. New Mexico, Eddy Co., Carlsbad Caverns Nat'l Park
Morning spent doing laundry for first time
since Yuma. In afternoon drove S
to Parks area and inspected the "hole
in the ground." Caverns not seen
since no more trips scheduled for
that day. Returning to entrance near
White's City spent about hour looking
for Sceloporus poinsettii in rocky
outcrops in canyon next S of
entrance road. No Sceloporus seen
but Urosaurus and Holbrookia
texana taken. Discovered Coluber brevis
under rock slabs and collected three.
All young. Afternoon warm but
heavily overcast. Returned to Carlsbad
to 2 camp for night.
