W. Riemer 1949 Journal 1 Aug. New Mexico, Grant Co., N Mimbres to Silver City deep spots or shallows by rocks. In most places about 1 ft. deep. Advised not to go beyond 2nd ranch buildings because of quicksand in river. Road eventually leads to Fork of Gila and then to Gila Cliff Dwelling Nat'l Mon. Along river in several places hot springs occur. T. eques and R. pipiens occur in both stream and hot spring. Water over 40°C. Are the frogs in such pools especially adapted for such pools and do they choose such sites in preference to cool river? It is difficult to imagine occupation of one or the other habitat at random. Some interesting work on temp. tolerance and the possibility of two district Ranid populations being present is available. On leaving canyon saw wild flocks of turkeys at summit of ridge. Heavy rains had made road to back to GOS Ranch slippery and our first task of digging the truck out of the ditch was begun. Near Mimbres again picked up two B. compactilis adults on road after dark. Just outside Santa Rita spotted snake on road. Proved to be Ficinia cona. Stayed in auto court for night in Silver City.
