30 July Arizona, Apache Co, S Springerille to New Mexico,
Socorro Co., Socorro. Wrote up notes in
morning, 1300 hours left camp and drove
to Socorro without stop on U.S. Hwy 60.
Arrived at Socorro 1655 hours. Objective:
contact C. Howe in hopes of replenishing
formaldehyde supply and getting jeep to go
into Sacramento Mts to search for
P. hardii. Could not locate him and
finally set up camp 11 miles S
Socorro on creosote flat. Creosote
stand almost pure, in bloom. No
specimens seen on road in that 11
miles though dark, warm, and ideal
in all obvious ways.
3 July New Mexico, Socorro Co., Socorro to N Mimbres, Grant
Co., Returned to Socorro and spent most of
morning looking for C. Howe. About noon
discovered he must have left town just
about the time we entered yesterday evening.
Called my wife at noon on her birthday.
Then on U.S. Hwy 85 drove S to Caballo
and took State 180 into Mimbres Mts.
Just over summit spent several hours
in damp well-wooded canyon looking
for salamanders. Conditions appeared
ideal but could find nothing. Taking
State 61 N again set up camp about 15 mi.
