W. Rieman 1949 Journal 29 July Arizona, Navajo Co., Mr. Lakeside to Apache Co., S Springerville Here again the Hyla situation looked good. Continued on toward Springerville. About half way between Indian Pine and Springerville reached elevation of 9100 ft. where several scenery shots taken into last of sun. This country is high, flat essentially, and covered with grass. All hills and slopes covered with heavy timber. It is beautiful beyond description. Several miles further Bob got shot. Sunset clouds at last possible minute. Ironically, amongst all natures beauties the cameras wouldn't function properly for the only really good sunset of the trip, a gallon of concentrated formaldehyde had just saturated the truck and was making driving next to impossible even with the doors and wind shield fully opened. Just at dark stopped to cook dinner and wash out truck when it started to rain during mid-operation. What a difficult life! Finally reached Springerville at 10 2210 and headed for Hyla w. type locality 11 mi. S of town. Road quickly climbed to 9300 at 11 mi. Cold, air temp. 14.8°C and no Hyla heard so returned down mountain to more sheltered spot for night.
