28 July Arizona, Coconino Co., Mr. Flagstaff to Navajo Co., Mr. Lakeside:
returned to the water because of recent
heavy rains to breed? Also Ernest caught
two young Thamnophis elegans. In
camp I took one S. undulatus.
About 1300 hours left camp. Entire
morning spent writing notes. In
Flagstaff spent most of afternoon
buying supplies and caring for
personal matters. Discovered that the
Kitchen Kastle is a bad place to eat
that Conrad's Machine Shop is a
honest, inexpensive place to get
small things repaired. Did a nice
job on my camera film winder.
In later afternoon drove to Holbrook
and then Show Low by dark.
Young kids in town told I spot
1½ mi. N Lakeside, a swimming hole,
where small solid green frogs, "toad-
frogs" were abundant. Investigation
showed up more and could hear
more call. One R. pipiens tabor
at the pool. This is in conifer, yellow
pine-oak belt. Vast areas of junipers
scattered over grassland between
Holbrook and Show Low. Looks almost
like parks.
