23 July Arizona, Cochise Co., Fort Huachuca to 10.5 mi. NNE Douglas
why were only Scaphiopus present here?
Actually they were present but in small
numbers at least and not calling. Collected
two S. couchii and one hammardii.
24 July Arizona Cochise Co., 10.5 mi. NNE Douglas to Graham
Co., vicinity Calva. Left camp about 1100 hours
and drove NE-ward toward Thordsburg, N.M.
32 mi. NE Douglas stopped to collect in
one of few sunny spots available.
Scattered heavy rains all about the
one centered over the Chiricahuas caused
us to cancel trip into those mts. At
is collection locality got Cnemidophorus
qularis, Scelopous undulatus, Holbrookia
maculata, Bufo compactilis and cognatus;
Scaphiopus hammardii and couchii larvae.
This was arid grassland habitat which
had much standing water resulting
from recent storms. Stopped just SE
Duncan in Greenlee Co. to write notes. Before
being driven out by rain Ernie got 2 H. texana
the first of the trip. Beautiful lizards
with a rainbow of colors. Just beyond
Duncan noted young H. suspectum DOR
on pavement. For details see R. Stellbrin's
