W. Reiner 1949 Journal 9 July San Bernardino Co. to Yuma, Yuma Co., Arizona. That stretch of U.S. Hwy 95 closely paralleling River said by R. Stelbruis to be very productive for night work. Left Ehrenburg at 1715. Almost immediately Saguaros appear. Palo Verde, ocotilla, creosote, encelia (brittle bush), cholla and ironwood present. At Quartzite took State Hwy 95 S to Yuma. Both ends of road well paved and it appears from construction work in progress that it is to be paved road all the way through. Small sand dune area appears 15-20 mi. outside Yuma. R. Stelbruis says reminds him of Pinto Basin dunes. Briefly looked over dunes 23.1 mi. out of Yuma at sun- set but found nothing out. Tracks abundant. Arrived in Yuma 2020. In town 0.2 mi E Center St on 1st St. heard loud loud chorus of toads. Call very different than I had heard before - proved to be B. wood- housii. Notes as to temp. & environment, and bodies; notes on spacing and calls in R. Stelbruis notes. Impressed by latter's "hoarse cry & baby" sound. Bull frogs heard in distance. Stelbruis pointed out chorus of night-hawks W of town near camp. Sounded very much like distant small pump motor, a tractor.
