27 June Hobbled Creek to 22.5 mi. ESE Desert, Millard Co., Utah
Rana pipiens. Impressed by Desert in passing through. Single "Desert Cash Store"
and gas station. No other stores, shops,
shows, etc. A very "proper" town. Passed
through at 1920 and set up camp at
above locality next to sand dunes
just at dark.
28 June Millard Co., to 2.0 mi. SW Joseph, Sevier Co., Utah
Spent most of morning on notes and
pickling animals. At 1300 rapidly broke
camp because wind sprung up across
sand dunes rapidly making a local
dust storm. On road to Holden,
State Hwy 26, recorded one DOR gopher
make. Then turned NE on U.S. 91 to
Scipio and took State 63 to Salina.
Just N and W of Scipio lake appear several
thick stands of conifers in mountains.
Hiked into large canyon W of N end
of lake in hopes of turning up a new
salamander. No such luck! Good thick
oak leaf litter, plenty of thoroughly rotten
logs and many rocks yet Stebbins
said none were sufficiently damp for
best conditions. Many similar appearing
spots (from distance) seen along road
SW Salina. Stebbins thinks well worth
