25 June Salt Lake City to Hobble Creek, E Springville,
Utah Co., Utah - to Provo via U.S.#40 and
#189, called by some the Alpine Loop.
Most of roadway through high alpine valleys
and meadow. Extremely green and lush
appearing. Rapid streams and rivers
frequent. Mts (Wasatch Range) steep,
rocky. Little organic matter on or
in soil. Perhaps this feature prevents
salamander existence in these mountains.
V. Tanner says Rockies with same
type of soil (Wasatch Range considered
part of Rockies, says Kelson). Stopped
along road in several places to look
for Pseudacris and B. woodhousii. At
13.6 mi. NNW Heber, Summit Co., got large
number of various kinds of tadpoles (unident-
ified) and adult pipiens. 13 mi. NE
Provo got pipiens and Thamnophis elegans.
After reaching Provo, visited Vance
Tanner, an agreeable sort of fellow,
who showed us some of collection of
Brigham Young University. Also provided
information on collecting sites in State
(see R. Stelbuis journal) and suggested
Hobble Creek as one of best local spots
for collecting. Camped for night along
creek,
