20 June 2 mi. S Beatty, Nye Co., Nevada
looking for Xantusia vigilis. None
found nor any signs, eg. cast skins.
Territites present in one log in large
numbers but entire situation almost
powder dry. Is this too dry for animals
to expose themselves. Questions
arose as to nature of toads at Oasis,
Mono Co.; water is present, and also
in Eureka Valley to S of Deep Springs.
Valley larger than Deep Springs Valley
and Indians lived there at one time
though actual presence of water is
not known by Mrs. Campbell of
Deep Springs School. Also it is not
accessible by car through Soldier
Pass from Deep Springs Valley. Proceeded
S on U.S. Hwy 95 to Beatty. Creosote
brush begins to appear at 4 mi.
NE Beatty. This probably marks
boundary of range of many desert
forms of herps says Stebbins. Picked
up Rhinocheilus lecontei just W of Beatty
in early evening and a Bufa lorenzi
nelsoni at locality. Camped at
locality for night.
