W. Reiner 1949 Journal 04 June Pinchurst, Contra Costa Co., Calif. with even moderate rate of flow. Two adult Triturus taken, both recaptures, one, last taken in April. One Rana boylii marked. Good number of custers now hatched and larvae seen on bottom. Appear to favor silty, rather clean bottoms in shallow water near old clusters. Apparently none of clusters in immediate vicinity of adults yet hatched. Many small fish throughout. Flycatcher nest filled with loose duff and apparently abandoned. 11 June 1445-1645 spent in area. Temp. at 1515: air 19.6, water 14.8. Clear and warm. Stream lower and flow quiet through- out. No adults noted at all. Essentially all larvae now hatched. Growth appears very rapid. Larvae numerous. Seem to prefer shallow water at least to 22 cm. with silty or gravelly bottom. Appear not able to tolerate any apparent current. Individuals 17 and 20 mm. long measured. Such presumably hatched last week. Newly hatched about 15 mm. Some several yards from any known clusters. Much
