Journal W. Reiner 1949 15 May Pinehurst, Contra Costa Co., Calif. level up slightly, due to rains. 8 Triturus taken, 1 adult o7, 7 juveniles. 4 7 juveniles new animals. Eggs I most advanced clusters have both eyes and longitudinal pigment stripes. Hatching date imminent, 1 adult remarked animal DOR in lower area. Noted that adult animals disappearing just prior to hatching of larvae. A selective factor in operation? Nest of Western Fly- catcher noted just below the upper area, 3 ft above stream and lodged in moole in stream bank. 4 recently hatched young. Though young touched and counted in presence of mother (?) she was later seen occupying nest. Could be closely approached before being flushed. 18 May Because of very heavy rains last night and today a check was made of salamanders on road between 1915 and 2120. Temperature of air, about 12°C. 15 Triturus, 9 DOR, 6 LOR noted during period. Also 1 Batrachosapa 2 Ancides, 1 Ensatina all LOR.
