W. Riener 1949 Journal 16 Apr. Pinehurst, Contra Costa Co., Calif. 1215-1600 spent in area. Weather, as during past week, clear and sunny. Stream level down some more. Water in pools clear and quiet. Temp. at 1250: air 16.6; water 11.4. 8 Triturus taken and 1 additional seen in stream. 5 of 8 newly marked (3 ♂♂ - 2 juveniles). 3 recaptures from last week (2♀♀ - 1 juvenile). All in lower area. ♂♂ tend to be losing breeding characteristics of pigmentation and form. Two adults noted (DOR) on road and may represent return to upland areas before ground dries too thoroughly. 28 clusters now noted in area. 23 Apr. 1130-1440 spent in area. Weather, as during past week clear and sunny. Stream level g rad ually dropping. Even deepest pools clear. Few areas of rapid current left but stream generally quiet or with moderate currents in narrow channels. Temperature at 1415: air 18.4, water 13.6. 11 Triturus taken. 9 new (4 ♂♂, 1 ♀♀, 4 juveniles); and 2 returns. 18 returns last taken
