2 Apr. Pinehurst, Contra Costa Co., Calif.
1230-1640 spend in area. Weather:
clear, cool, sunny. The same all
during past week. Temp.: air 16°;
water 11° at 1415. In covering upper
area once 9 animals taken, 1 a
recapture juvenile, 5 adult ?? (2 being
amplexed, 2 laying eggs), 2 adult ??
both amplexing. All, but one ??
laying ??, in quiet water of pools
certain to remain longest i.e.
deepest. Eggs being laid and already
laid in at least 3 spots. These
are first eggs seen in area.
Stream lower than last week
and quiet pools only slightly
murky at bottom. Otherwise
water very clear.

Eggs taken at Tilden 25 Mar.
developing except cluster which
was out of water when found.
Did soon developed fungus (?)
covering and destroyed. Also
eggs laid in aquaria developing.
All ?? appear to lose breeding
features (i.e. smooth skin, pale
color etc.) in aquaria.
