just within mapped area. Walking
in broad daylight (raining) parallel
to and on road. Surveyed about
half of stream above bridge for
about 3/4 hour revealed only one
animal, that a ♂ (?) but not yet
in breeding condition. Weather:
overcast with light rain starting
at 1145 and continuing on at
least until 1430 at which time
area left. Water temperature: 9.6°,
air: 120°. 11 animals marked.
P. Stelbrin reports several pairs
Triturus per pool in stream of
Briones Valley on 20 Feb. 1949.
Joe Gorman, grad. student, MVZ,
reports large numbers in Pinole
Creek on same date.
26 Feb. 1300-1700 spent in area. Temp:
air 8.6°; water 9.0°. Stream
up again due to rains since
22 Feb. 1949. Water turbulent
and rather muddy. Weather: Overcast
and raining entire afternoon. Sheet
1 of mapping completed. Only
single Triturus marked. Stelbrin
reports 4 seen in his area under
