19 Feb Pinehurst, Contra Costa Co., Calif.
midcurrent 6.9°. Stream has
receded to about normal since
no rain during past week. Water
very clear, not turbulent. Seemed
quite suitable for Triturus though but
few minutes spent searching and
none seen. Many Ensatina seen
under surface boards.
22 Feb: About 1030-1200 spend searching
stream below bridge for Triturus.
2ff, 7 breeding 87 marked. Localities
plotted on very rough sketch map
and also spotted on ground with
red wax crayon. Meitner 1ff
in water, but none 87 out
of water. Many "ideal" looking
pools without Triturus. #07 & 08
when found were facing each other
while resting on bottom of pool
and several inches apart. They
approached one another, seemed to
touch each others snouts with that
structure and after few minutes
both turned in different directions
and proceeded off. No animosity
at all evident. On return to
car one young & taken on road
